30 Famous Mythical Humanoid Creatures

1. Gog and Magog

Gog Magog appear in the Qur’an, Book of Genesis, the Book of Ezekiel and the Book of Revelation. They are variously presented as supernatural beings, demons or national groups that lurked upon the land. Gog and Magog occur widely in mythology and folklore and their existence is accepted by many religions including Islam, Christianity and Judaism. The widely accepted belief both in Christianity and Islam holds that “He of the Two Horns” (a great and righteous ruler) or Two Ages (one who impacts on two ages) travelled the world in three directions, until he found a tribe threatened by Gog and Magog, who were of an “evil and destructive nature” and “caused great corruption on earth.” The people offered tribute in exchange for protection, he agreed to help them, but refused the tribute; he constructed a great wall that the hostile nations were unable to penetrate. They will be trapped there until doomsday, and their escape will be a sign of the end: “The War of Gog and Magog” would precede the return of Jesus.

2. Satyr

Satyrs were originally seen as companions of the goat god Pan in ancient Greek civilisation . The first drawings of satyrs were of normal men, though often with an erect phallus. It was later merged with the Roman faun which is when they began to be depicted as half men half goats (the upper body being that of the man, and the lower half being that of a goat). Satyrs are described as roguish but faint-hearted folk — subversive and dangerous, yet shy and cowardly. Many early accounts which apparently refer to this animal describe the males as being sexually aggressive towards human women and towards females of its own species. In old age they are often seen with horns on their head, while young satyrs are seen with nubs instead.

3. Abarimon

Abarimon is the name of a legendary race with backwards feet, but in spite of this handicap were able to run at great speed. They lived side by side with wild animals and attempts to capture them failed because they were so savage. They lived in a great valley of Mount Imaus (now called the Himalayan Mountains in Pakistan). There was a special quality of air which meant if it was breathed for a long period of time it would be impossible to breathe any other type of air and the inhabitants could never leave the valley alive.

4. Nephilim

Nephilim are beings, who appear in the Hebrew Bible; specifically mentioned in the Book of Genesis and the Book of Numbers; they are also mentioned in other Biblical texts and in some non-canonical Jewish writings. They were called fallen ones because men’s hearts would fail at the sight of them. Some suggest that they were giants and when they fell, the ground shook, causing others to fall too. They might not be historical figures but ancient imagery with questionable meaning. Some view of them as the hybrid offspring of fallen angels and human women. In the Hebrew Bible there is also mention of Rephaites alongside Nephilims, who were an ancient race of giants.

5. Mermaid

A mermaid is a mythological aquatic creature with a female human head and torso and the tail of a fish..The mermaids have been discussed since at least 5000 BC. Her origins are believed to be from the Great Queen Atargatis, who loved a mortal shepherd and unintentionally killed him. Ashamed, she jumped into a lake to take the form of a fish, but the waters would not conceal her divine beauty. Thereafter, she took the form of a mermaid—human above the waist, fish below. Mermaids were however noted in British folklore as unlucky omens – both foretelling disaster and provoking it. There is a high possibility that people had been confusing them with Sirenias (aquatic animals) or people suffering from a congenital disease Sirenomelia (aka mermaid syndrome in which a child is born with his or her legs fused together).

6. Banshee

The Banshee is a female spirit in Irish mythology , usually seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld. The story of the bean-sidhe began as a fairy woman keening at the death of important personages. In later stories, the appearance of the banshee could foretell the death. According to the legend, the banshee can appear in a variety of guises. Most often she appears as an ugly, frightening old lady, but can also appear as a stunningly beautiful woman of any age that suits her. Although not always seen, her mourning call is heard, usually at night when someone is about to die and usually around woods.

7. Abatwa

In Zulu mythology , Abatwa are tiny humans said to be able to hide beneath a blade of grass and to be able to ride ants. They are said to live a nomadic lifestyle and are continually on the hunt for game. Legend states that if one happens to come across an Abatwa, one will typically be asked a question like, “From where did you first see me?” One must reply by saying one saw them from a mountain, or some far away area. They are said to be extremely sensitive about their size, and if one answers by saying that one only saw them right then for the first time, the Abatwa will try to kill them with poison arrows. Stepping on an Abatwa by accident is also said to be a death sentence. Due to their shy nature, they will only tolerate being seen by the very young (said to be anyone under the age of 4), by magicians, and by pregnant women. If a pregnant woman in her seventh month of pregnancy sees a male Abatwa, it is said that she will give birth to a boy.

8. Elf

An elf is a being of Germanic mythology . The elves were originally thought of as a race of divine or semi-divine beings endowed with magical powers, which they use both for the benefit and the injury of mankind. In pre-Christian mythology, they appear to have been divided into light elves and dark elves. The earliest preserved description of elves comes from Norse mythology that holds that the men could be elevated to the rank of elves after death, Crossbreeding was possible between elves and humans in the Old Norse belief. Words for the nymphs of the Greek were translated to be same as “elves” or its variants by Anglo-Saxon scholars.

9. Cyclops

In Greek and Roman mythology , a cyclops is a member of a primordial race of giants, each with a single eye in the middle of its forehead. It is a great possibility that people have been mistaken a congenital abnormality called Cyclopia in which the human baby is malformed having only one central eye.

10. Orc

Orc is a word used to refer to various races of tough and warlike humanoid creatures in various fantasy settings. Orcs are often portrayed as misshapen humanoids who are brutal, warmongering, and sadistic. Orcs are described of varying size, ugly and filthy. They are fanged, bow-legged and long-armed, and some have dark skin as if burned. The author Tolkien describes them as “squat, broad, flat-nosed, sallow-skinned, with wide mouths and slant eyes … degraded and repulsive versions of the (to Europeans) least lovely Mongol-types”. They are portrayed as miserable, crafty and vicious beings.

11. Kapre

Kapre is a Philippine mythical creature that could be characterized as a tree demon, but with more human characteristics. It is described as being a tall, brown, hairy male with a beard. Kapres are normally described as smoking a big tobacco pipe, whose strong smell would attract human attention. The term kapre comes from the Arabic “kaffir” meaning a non-believer in God. apres may make contact with people to offer friendship, or if it is attracted to a woman. If a Kapre befriends any human, especially because of love, the Kapre will consistently follow its “love interest” throughout life. Also, if one is a friend of the Kapre then that person has the ability to see it and if they were to sit on it then any other person could see it. Kapres are also said to play pranks on people, frequently making travelers become disoriented and lose their way in the mountains or in the woods.

12. Leperchaun

Leprechauns have been linked to the Tuatha Dé Danann of Irish mythology who are thought to derive from the pre-Christian deities of Ireland. When the surviving stories were written, Ireland had been Christian for centuries, and the Tuatha Dé were represented as mortal kings, queens and heroes of the distant past; however there are many clues to their former divine status. Popular depiction shows leperchauns as being no taller than a small child. The leprechaun is said to be a solitary creature, whose principal occupation is making and mending shoes, and who enjoys practical jokes. According to William Butler Yeats, the great wealth of these fairies comes from the “treasure-crocks, buried of old in war-time”, which they have uncovered and appropriated.According to McAnally the leprechaun is the son of an “evil spirit” and a “degenerate fairy” and is “not wholly good nor wholly evil”.

13. Ogre

Ogre possibly derived from Oegrus from Greek mythology who was the son of Greek blood shedder god. The word ogre is of French origin . Keeping the Greek myth, Oegrus might have cursed some people to ogres where an ogre is described large, cruel, monstrous and hideous humanoid monster. Also featured in mythology, folklore and fiction. Ogres have appeared in many classic works of literature. In art, ogres are often depicted with a large head, abundant hair and beard, a voracious appetite, and a strong body. The term is often applied in a metaphorical sense to disgusting persons. The French tale tells of them as inhabitants of kingdom of Logres [England].

14. Dziwożona

Dziwozoana or Mamuna are female swamp demons in Slavic mythology known for being malicious and dangerous. Most at risk of becoming one of these demons after death were thought to be midwives, old maids, unmarried mothers, pregnant women who die before childbirth, as well as abandoned children. Sometimes they carry off young men to be their husbands.

15. Mono Grande

They are described as ape-like hairy creatures with men-like torsos sighted in South America. They are reported as being aggressive to humans. However, they are unrecognized by a scientific consensus and myths that came to South America with European colonists.

  1. “Sometimes they carry off young MEN to be their HUSBANDS.” The Dziwozona is, for sure, the most scary monster for many then…

  4. SiD
Do you mean “A supernatural TV show” or “Supernatural the TV show”
Because if you mean the latter, I only remember the Windigo being on there. What others were there? Unless, of course, you’re counting the vamps and werewolves, which I am not because of the major alterations the show took to them (retractable fangs for vamps, lack of fur for wolves, etc)
Sorry, I’m a Supernatural addict (A posessed Sammy is an awesome Sammy! Jared does a good EVIL SAM)
Also, did you see Live Free or Twihard? I’m not a Twilight fan, so I found that episode hilarious. I’m sure there are some that were offended though…

Anywho, I just was wondering what other critters the show contained.

  5. what about the Yowie from Australia ? similar to the yeti and satchquatch..,,there all demonic manifestations of the spirit world ..Kingdom of darkeness and the kingdom of light ,,The bible ,explains the difference and the ongoing battle ..And why these creatures .manifest ,when you least expect it . Be armed With the name Of Jesus ! The king of kings and lord of lords ! Shout Jesus !! at the top of your voice ..drive Satan and his wimpy creatures ,,way ,away !

Jesus is lord ,,rebuke Evil ! in His name !

  6. nothing i was looking for, i wanted an irish male creature that appears human 😛

  7. This is awesome, I love monsters of legend/mythology. I am not quite sure why though. I haven’t really seen any of these so it’s great! (: I love them, but don’t you think that demon baby thing looks strange? I know it’s an edited picture but if the baby possessed looks like that doesn’t anyone find out? I mean, the look of the baby is quite scary. I’m sure I would be able to– by looking at the baby — find out what it is. Wouldn’t someone else? Or do they hide their appearance from the humans? That’s awesome though lol

  8. i’ll have to admit that Kapre has that good illustration eventhough it has that inaccuracy in it,..kapres suppose to be hairy, dark and would smoke a long fat cigar,..but what my grandmother or the other elders didn’t tell me however is the origin of the word Kapre,.i have only known by now that it actually mean an atheist or an unbeliever of god,..back when i was a child, i thought the word kapre would mean as something “black and dark”, as to what my mother told me when she was young, she have been teased and nicknamed as KAPRA, for she had that negroid complexion LOL

  9. My mom is from the Philippines, she told me there was an old woman who lived beside her (neighbor but a little far from her), was an aswang, and that sometimes at her window he would hear “wok wok wok wok wok wok wok!!!!!!!!” (the sound of a wok wok,) at the window, and that it was her, and that there were many rumors about the woman living there and how at night she turned to an aswang, and she also had this mythological creature demon creature that is, as a pet in her basement, I forgot what it’s called but it’s like a sick dog who’s legs are messed up and walk backwards, it was very scary..Not even lying :/ don’t go there…i am next year but I really don’t know if I should haha

  10. Is that MJ person okayy? Whatever “evil people” they were, they werent a demonic spawn. I know life science quite well and thats why Im an atheist, due to the scientifically impossible fact of a hell or heaven. Yes the US government is full of satanists and the Illuminati. But theyre as ignorant as most of the world. And if your God will protect you and your family, why would you have been attacked? And just because a band is called Incubus, doesnt mean they conjure anything. Incubus has no connection to hellspawn in anyway, they use the name metaphorically. Yes SOME music is satanic but not all, no where near half even. MJ reply when your God shows up and fixes everything.

  11. Thanks Google for all the information on different mythic humanoids. I would be so happy if added more mythic humanoids. I know some mythic humanoids of my culture but I am not a good artist to sketch them on the paper. Especially I like to have the Buzzer-man and Khanmbongba Lungbongba painted and published to the world so that the interested people have some ideas of my people’s mythic imaginations (or reality?).

  12. (Northern British Columbia, Canada) Late one night, round midnight, i was out 4-Wheeling around the village. i was driving down by the look-out point at the river. off in the distance, by some massive cottonwood trees where tourists camp, i seen a big fire. i thought i would go and say hi, see if they need something. i started to rip over there. as i got closer to the fire the smaller it got. then i started to realize that it wasnt at the cottonwood trees. it was about a hundred meters closer. the closer i got the smaller the fire got, and it was in the tall grass in between a fork in the turn around circle. when i got very close the fire disappeared and separated into two large, round, scary red eyes, about 2 inches across. considering the fact that i was just lured far off into the dark by something with fire in its eyes i was still feeling relatively brave.it just sat there looking me in the eyes, it was only about 3 feet tall, so i tried to kill it with my Quad. when i ripped after the little creep, it ran! it ran like a man! on two legs, it sprinted over to a near by small 4 foot embankment, and dove over head first, then it came back up stuck his head out and just stared at me. i hit the breaks with the lights pointed at it about 25 feet away. i jumped off the Quad and grabbed a small handful of small rocks and whipped them at it. it just sat there with out a blink or fear. ive encountered all wakes of wildlife and when you chase a wild animal it runs! this thing didnt. i grabbed a heavy handful size boulder and tossed it, missing by inches. it just sat there. i grabbed another and threw it, this time it was dead on, right at its face. it just dodged it, while still standing in the same spot and continued to stare, it was then that i fully realized that i wasnt dealing with something beyond nature. i was terrified by its total lack of fear so i jumped on the quad and committed myself to a fast get-away at about a Buck twenty. i never looked back. but i think about it all the time. if you know of anything simular please post, i am most interested.

  13. It was 3 feet tall. its color was black(as far as i could tell). it was very stalkey and muscular. round circular head with huge round orange fire colored eyes. no tail, i dont think(i told a friend about it and he said his dad had seen something of the same discription, but with a tail, and further away) and it lured me over with its eyes. i’ve read through all the creature discriptions and theTYIANAK sounds most simular, especially with its luring tactics.

  14. I am in here in the Philippines and my family saw (i believe) the same thing, right inside our house but it suddenly disappeared. my mother herself told me trembling with what she saw. I thought she was the only one who saw this thing. but when i look around my father was there also, who was holding a plastic chair as if he is about to strike something.. they both told me that they saw blazing red eyes floating in the air staring at us. a few months later, my cousins who was visiting from manila city saw this blazing eyes and they just couldnt believe with with what the saw. for me it is something…we are not alone.

  15. man i will never take a baby that i find in the woods i will just leave it…..

  16. Great briefing on the legends and myths. Certainly hope most of them stay in the legends and myths category. Except for the Sasquatch.

  17. ug this stuff just tells me I can’t be crazy after all. What I want to tell is just one of my experiences I was walking back to my cabin from taking a shower at fall creek falls TN USA, and heard something moving in the leaves (I only had my clothes and a small flashlight but its bright enough to see at 25 feet pretty good), I turned and saw one of the scariest things of my life, when I put my on it, it stopped moving in the leaves it turned stood up and looked right at me before shrieking at me like a woman really scared or something, then it ran at me and I am really sure was trying to attack me but all of a sudden it ran into like an invisible wall or something it hit its head right into it, it looked right at me hissed try to move forward and ran into it again. Then it shrieked, ran into and behind some bushes and sat and watched me while I was scared as shit.I just walked backwards all the way to my cabin watching it. it was whitish and humanoid with two large oval inky black eyes it was shorter than a normal adult like maybe 4-5 feet and had weird claws and its mouth had no normal jaw it closed from all directions and was full of very sharp looking teeth and a sunken nose and no ears that I noticed. Note to anyone reading this I was almost 19 when I saw this and I am a strong dude work out a lot and am not scared ever really by people or animals but this was different. Also some girl I met recently was telling me weird stories about strange stuff and started talking about fall creek falls and described the creature I saw perfectly to the scream it made. I have never told anyone outside of my family about this, and this girl has never met any of them before. Also about the blazing eyes creature I saw something similar before only it was tall with long limbs and looked deathly starved and had gray black mottled skin and the eyes large oval, looked like gold being smelted, deep fiery eyes that drew you in. I ran for my life. please right me anyone if any of this is familiar to you

  18. In the phillipeans their is a woman like creatcher who can fly and seperate her body in half and attacks pregnant women. The people from there believe it to be true, it was on the new lol

  19. first off even if there was such a thing as a monster they would have killed us all by now as savagly as they could! all you people would be dead.

  20. I already know that most people had this experiance but I would like to share mine. I was only 12 at the time so that is what made it all the more frightening. I was in my room playing video games and I paused it and went to the bathroom and when I came back before I could get back to the game i heard a whisper that said “get out” and of course I ran up my steps like sonic. I had another experiance like this one in the same house, actually I had several experiances in that house. The next one was when i was in my living room watching tv. While it was on a commercial i herad a whisper but i couldnt make out what it said but i knew for sure that the sentance ended with the word you. I was the only one in the room so i knew it couldnt of been anyone else. Now i have one more experiance to share. I was in the game room along with my tow step sisters and they were sitting on the other side of the room. I had a glass of tea sitting in the middle of the tabel and all of the suddan the glass flew acroos the table and fell on my lab and then on the floor and broke, it was the most frightening thing that happened to me ever. Thank you for reading these 100% real experiences… and if you dont belive me on this than thats your loss.
