The decade (2000-2010) brought hundreds of movies to the audience. Some were a failure yet some got success critically and commercially.The movies were from different genre. Some were science fiction and some ignited the sparks of romance, some were based on family stories and yet some narrated history. There were movies bringing comedy and fun to the adults as well as animated movies for kids. This list includes 15 best Hollywood films of the decade as decided by the critics and the audience.

The Prestige is a mystic thriller directed by the famous movie director, Christopher Nolan. The movie is based on a novel written by Christopher Priest. The film is set in 19th century, narrating the rivalry between two magicians Robert Angier and Alfred Borden. Both the magicians had a passion to create the ultimate illusion. Their rivalry starts with the death of Julia, the beloved wife of Robert Angier. She dies during a stage performance and Robert blames Alfred for her death. The film stars Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale. Imdb rated the movie as 8.4 on 10 and critics on Rotten Tomatoes rated it as 7.1 on 10.

Children of Men is a science fiction, directed and written by Alfonso Curon. The movie takes us to 2027 when humans are incapable of reproducing. This infertility leaves humanity with less than a century to survive. The story starts with the discovery of a lone pregnant woman. The city is fractious with violence and war between sects. In such times of despair and grief, she is the only hope of survival. A former activist decides to take care of her. He travels along with the mother and child and takes them to a Human Project across the seas. Their journey is a constant fight for survival. The movie is rated as 8.1/10 on Imdb and 8/10 by critics on Rotten Tomatoes.


13. Avatar (2009)

Released in 2009, Avatar became one of the 15 best movies of the decade. It is a science fiction, written and directed by James Cameron. The movie features Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver, and Joel David Moore. The movie took more than 1.5 decades to complete as the scriptment of the film was written in 1994. This is the first part of the trilogy. The movie is based in the year 2054. The story begins with the desire to mine a valuable stone, unobtanium from an earth like moon known as Pandora, in the Alpha Centauri star system. This project brings threat to the peaceful lives of 10 feet tall inhabitants of the planet. The death of the twin brother of Sam Worthington makes him a part of this project. He is a paraplegic former Marine. He falls in love with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and helps her protect her planet. The movie is marvelously directed and got an excellent response. It is rated as 8.3/10 on Imdb and 7.5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes


12. How To Train Your Dragon (2010)

The story is about Hiccup, an energetic and young viking who in his hunt for dragons develops bonding with a dragon. He would have to kill the dragon to find acceptance in his tribe as a dragon slayer. But he loses the desire to kill the creature after capturing a dragon. He starts training the dragon. In his efforts to train the dragon he discovers the loyal and beautiful nature of the animal and befriends him. He reaches a conclusion that people misjudge and mistreat the specie. The movie is based on his efforts to protect the species and to eradicate and uproot the ignorant and cruel customs endangering the specie. The movie got positive reception. It got a rating of 8.2/10 on Imdb and 7.9/10 on Rotten Tomatoes.


11. Up (2009)

Up is a beautifully conceived animated film, produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The film brings comedy and adventure to the audience. It is based on the sweet and innocent desires of a 78 years old man. The old man had a lifelong desire to explore the wilds of South America. To fulfill his desire, he ties thousands of helium balloons to his house and sets out on an adventurous  journey. The movie was positively acclaimed by the critics as well as the audience. It got 8.4/10 on Imdb and 8.6/10 on Rotten tomatoes. Most of the audience gave it a rating of 3.5/5.

The movie was released in 2007. It is written and produced by Paul Thomas Anderson. The movie is based on  greed and narrates the story of a greedy and charismatic silver miner turned oil man who sets out on a quest for oil and money during the oil boom of Southern California in the late 19th and early 20th century. The film was critically acclaimed. It got many award nominations. The movie had 8 Oscar nominations and won awards for the best actor and the best cinematography. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes rated the movie as 8.4/10 and Imdb gave it a rating of 8.2/10. Audience gave it an encouraging rating of 4 on 5.


9. Memento (2000)

It is a psychological thriller film, released in the start of the decade. Placed at number 9, the movie is highly acclaimed movie even after 10 years. It is written and directed by the famous director Christopher Nolan. The movie is about a man with a short term memory loss. He is suffering from anterograde amnesia and couldn’t store new memories. He is on a hunt to find the killers of his wife. The man tattoos his entire body and takes notes and pictures of everything. Imdb rated the movie as 8.7/10 and the audience gave it a rating of 4 on 5. Rotten tomatoes rates the movie as 8.1/10.


8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a romantic fantasy, directed by Michel Gondry. The movie is based on the story of a couple who wants to erase the memories of their relationship after it turns sour. Joel Barish is heartbroken when he find out that his girlfriend underwent a procedure to erase his memories from her mind. He decides to do the same. As the memories of his girlfriend started to fade from his mind, he discovered that he still loved her and didn’t want to erase these beautiful memories of their relationship. The movie has an incomplete ending and the director left it on audience to decide the fate of the couple. The movie was a success commercially and was positively received by the critics. Many critics declared it as the best movie of the decade. Imdb gave it a rating of 8.5/10 and Rotten tomatoes rated it as 8.3/10.

  1. Wow, So Avatar dowsn’t belong there. Toy Story, neither. And the social Network lacked so much of a protagonist, that it got boring, and I was left with a… so… whats for diner feeling.

  2. Wow, not a good list at all with the exception of LOTR. Particularly “Children of Men” unless there were 2 movies with the same name because the one i saw stunk !!!!
